1. What if I miss the deadline for turning in documents for a renewal award?
It is important to complete the process by the Important Dates indicated. However, if you have missed the deadline, contact a SFS counselor in our office to discuss your options. (Return to top)

2. What should I do if my parents are divorced?
Complete the necessary documents based on your custodial parent information. (Return to top)

3. Do I keep my award if I study abroad?
If the program you choose to study abroad is a Washington University approved program, you will retain your award. Contact a SFS counselor to discuss the specifics according the program you choose. (Return to top)

4. What if I want a job, but I don't qualify for Federal Work-Study?
Part-time employment not funded by the Federal Work-Study Program is usually available both on and off campus. You can contact the Career Center at (314) 935-5499 for assistance. (Return to top)

5. How can I appeal my financial assistance award?
Our primary goal is to help you be successful, and we do all we can to help you stay in school. You are always welcome to speak with a Counselor if family circumstances have changed and your financial assistance award is not meeting your family's needs. (Return to top)

6. Will my award decrease over time?
Your award will probably stay the same or increase while you're a student at Washington University. The only basis for reducing financial assistance is a major improvement in a family's financial circumstances. (Return to top)

7. How can I consolidate my student loans?
Contact the lender directly to consider your options for consolidation of student loans with that lender. Federal law mandates that a borrower whose loans are all held by the same lender must consolidate with that lender. Borrowers whose loans are held by more than a single lender are free to consolidate with any of the lenders that participate in the federal student loan consolidation program. In most cases, you can only consolidate your loans once and your repayment terms may be affected. Do your research -- and be careful to select the option that's best for you! (Return to top)

8. Do I have to pay my student loans if I go on to graduate school?
You may be eligible to postpone your loan payments with an in-school deferment if you are attending an eligble school at least half-time. We would encourage you to contact your lender directly to verify their deferment policy. (Return to top)

9. What do I have to submit if I didn't file a tax return?
Notify the Office of Student Financial Services, in writing, of your non-filing status. (Return to top)

10. Can upperclass students apply for merit-based scholarships directly from Washington University?
Merit-based scholarships are awarded on a 4-year basis. Therfore, they are only awarded to students as they enter the University. Some fellowships may be available -- check the Student Guide for more information. (Return to top)

11. Can upperclass students apply for need-based assistance if they did not apply in their freshman year?
Yes. Contact an SFS Counselor to discuss your options. (Return to top)
